As a Charlotte elopement photographer, I know not every love story follows a traditional timeline, and honestly, those are often our favorites.

Leslie and her partner traveled all the way from Ohio to Charlotte, North Carolina, for one simple but meaningful reason: to finally have the wedding portraits they never got.

Like so many couples during COVID, they were married quietly in their living room. It was intimate, real, and full of love, but years later, Leslie still dreamed of wearing her wedding dress and celebrating that season of life with portraits that felt intentional and beautiful. When the time finally felt right, they decided to turn those long-awaited wedding photos into an experience and make a trip out of it.

Why They Chose Charlotte for Their Wedding Portraits

Charlotte is quickly becoming a favorite destination for couples who want to elope, get married privately, or want something a little different from a traditional wedding day.

With its mix of urban skyline views, modern architecture, lush green spaces, and walkable city energy, Charlotte offers endless options for couples who want variety without feeling overwhelmed. For Leslie and her husband, the city felt like the perfect place to mark this chapter—fresh, vibrant, and full of glowing ambiance since it was Christmastime.

They chose Romare Bearden Park, one of our favorite spots for elopement and portrait sessions in Uptown Charlotte.

Romantic Evening Portraits at Romare Bearden Park

Instead of a midday session, Leslie opted for an evening portrait session, which completely transformed the feel of their images.

As the sun dipped lower, the city softened. The light became warmer, shadows grew longer, and the skyline began to glow. Romare Bearden Park is especially stunning at this time of day. The combination of greenery, modern sculptures, and surrounding buildings creates a cinematic backdrop that feels both romantic and bold.

Leslie wore her wedding dress exactly as she had always imagined. No rush. No timeline. Just space to be present, move slowly, and let the moment breathe.

These portraits weren’t about recreating a wedding day. They were about honoring the marriage they already had and giving it the visual story it deserved.

When the Rain Rolled In, and They Rolled With It

Halfway through Leslie and Steven’s session, the weather shifted—and the rain started coming down.

Instead of rushing for cover or calling it quits, we leaned into it. Leslie and Steven smiled through the entire experience, laughing, staying close, and fully present with each other as the city glistened around them. The rain added movement, texture, and an extra layer of romance to their portraits, turning an already meaningful session into something unforgettable.

Moments like this are exactly why we love elopements and intimate portrait sessions. There’s room to be flexible, to adapt, and to let the story unfold naturally. Sometimes, the unexpected ends up being the most beautiful part.

Wedding Portraits After a COVID Elopement

We’ve photographed many couples who married during COVID and later decided to have portraits done, and the common thread is always the same: there’s no expiration date on celebrating your love.

Whether you:

  • Eloped privately
  • Got married at home
  • Postponed or downsized your wedding
  • Never wore your dress (or suit!) the way you hoped

You are just as worthy of intentional, beautiful wedding portraits.

Leslie’s session is proof that you don’t need a traditional wedding day to have meaningful images. Sometimes, waiting allows the story to unfold in an even more authentic way.

Planning an Elopement or Portrait Session in Charlotte, NC

If you’re considering eloping in Charlotte or traveling here for wedding portraits, Uptown locations like Romare Bearden Park offer an incredible balance of nature and city energy, especially for couples who love modern imagery.

Charlotte is ideal for:

  • Destination elopements
  • Post-elopement wedding portraits
  • Engagement Sessions
  • Senior Sessions
  • Anniversary sessions
  • Couples traveling from out of state

As a Charlotte elopement photographer, I regularly work with couples who plan their entire experience from afar, and I’m always happy to help with timing, locations, and creating a session that feels effortless and personal.

A Love Story Worth Celebrating—On Your Own Terms

Leslie and her partner didn’t need a crowd, a venue, or a timeline to make their marriage real. But choosing to travel, dress up, and step into this moment together was a powerful reminder that love deserves to be celebrated—again and again, if you want it to be.

If you’re dreaming of elopement photography in Charlotte or simply want wedding portraits that reflect who you are now, we’d love to help you create something meaningful.
